Summer Programs

ATTENDANCE

• Students who miss more than 4 hours total will receive an Attendance Fail (ATF) on their transcripts and must complete STA the following summer.
• Attendance is required for the entirety of the first and last day of STA.
  • Students who are absent on the first day will be dropped receiving an ATF for the program and will be required to repeat the entirety of the program the following summer.
  • Students who are absent on the final day will receive a Fail in both of their STA classes and will be required to repeat the entirety of the program the following summer.
• STA grades are part of the cumulative class rank GPA.
• Students who cannot attend this summer (only under extenuating circumstances) may file an appeal.
  • Appeals for deferred attendance explaining the extenuating circumstances are considered by a committee.
  • Granted appeals do not waive the requirement. Students with a granted appeal must complete STA the following summer.

We ask that all incoming students come in to pick up their school-issued Chromebook in preparation for STA.

• Welcome Assembly. New incoming students attend a welcome assembly and are introduced to high school graduation and college entrance requirements before completing a school tour.
• Registration. Students entering Grade 9 complete Fall Registration. During the registration process, students take a yearbook picture, receive their school ID, locker and Fall courses. New students entering grades ten, eleven and twelve will also receive their Chromebook during STA prior to completing Fall Registration in August.
• Wellness Assembly. Students participate in a student wellness assembly which focuses on the elimination of school violence and helps establish a school culture of kindness and compassion.
• Parent Meeting. Families will receive information regarding school policies, student accounts, Home Access Center, and the Canvas learning management system. This will be an IN-PERSON EVENING event.

Students attend English and Mathematics classes with a focus on grade level reading, writing, critical thinking, and computational skills. Students will complete several diagnostic assessments during STA, including the Northwest Evaluation Association Measure of Academic Progress (NWEA MAP) online assessments in Mathematics and Reading. Diagnostic data and other factors such as previous course grades, test scores, and teacher recommendation ensure proper placement in Mathematics and English courses. In addition to Math and English classes, students will have the opportunity to participate in team-building activities that help build a sense of community.

• Students must attend STA. Hours of attendance are 8:00 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. 
• Students will participate in Welcome assembly activities.
• Students will sample the annual registration and take their ID pictures.
• Free lunch will be provided every day during STA.

• Provide a successful transition to GHC
• Orient students to the school climate and campus
• Assess current learning and provide a unifying experience
• Acclimate students to the culture and campus of GHC
• Perform diagnostic tests to ensure proper placement in classes
• Model a college-readiness culture and develop a four-year academic plan
• Introduce families and students to higher education

• Students must attend STA from Monday, June 29 – Friday, July 17, 2026.
• Hours of attendance are 8:00 a.m. to 12:20 p.m.
• Friday, July 3 school will be closed for the July 4 holiday.

• The Summer Transition Academy (STA) is a GHC graduation requirement.
• In order to participate in the GHC graduation ceremony or receive a GHC high school diploma, students must complete STA.
• Students are enrolled in STA once enrollment is complete.
• Students will earn two and a half elective credits per class for the successful completion of STA, for a total of 5 elective credits. STA grades are part of the cumulative class rank GPA.
• Free lunch will be provided every day during STA.

• Three-week classes – Due to the accelerated nature of three-week courses, students are permitted only 4 hours of absence.
• Double block (AB) class – Students who are absent more than 8 hours from a class will receive a grade of Fail and be dropped from the class.
• Students enrolled in a four- hour (AB) class must attend both blocks for the required number of weeks to earn credit.
• Six-week single block (A or B) class: Students who are absent more than 4 hours from a class will receive a grade of Fail and be dropped from the class.
• Four-week ESY class (2-hour): Students who are absent more than 6 hours from a class will receive a grade of NP.
• Note: Students will NOT be excused for extended absences or vacations during Summer School. There are NO exceptions.

• Students must follow the GHC dress code at all times. Please review GHC’s dress code policy.

GHC Dress Code Policy

• All student-owned electronic devices such as but not limited to cell phones, earphones/earbuds, iPods, recorders, and/or cameras, may not be used or displayed during school hours.
• If a student uses a device during school hours, it will be confiscated until the parent/guardian picks up the device (7:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) from the Deans’ Office. The parent/guardian will need to show ID.
• The school is NOT responsible for the loss or theft of any electronic device.

• All students must be present for the required afternoon exam hours for their course exams, which end at 3:00 P.M.
• Students are not permitted to leave for lunch on extended days. Lunch will be provided.
• Holidays/No School: There is no school on observed holidays.
• Hours: Block One (Periods 1 and 2) 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.; Block Two (Periods 3 and 4) 10:20 a.m. to 12:20 p.m.; Block Three (Periods 5 and 6) 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

• Final exams will be given on extended days and will end at 3:00 p.m.
• Students must be present and must take the final exam on the respective dates, according to their summer school session (Six-Week, Three-Week, ESY).
• Students who do not attend will receive a ZERO on the final exam.
• Appeals can be applied for verifiable emergencies (trips and vacations are not emergencies).

• All grades are permanent and become part of the permanent transcript record.
• The last day to drop a class with NO MARK is the second day of each session. After these dates for respective summer sessions, drops will result in a grade of FAIL.

• Students MUST carry their school issued student ID cards with them at all times and present card upon request of school staff.
• Replacement ID cards cost $5 for the first card and $10 for each additional card.
• Students without an ID will be issued one hour of detention.

• The Attendance Office will process all emergency releases to leave school for personal or health reasons.
• A note to leave the campus early for personal business or appointments must be submitted to the Attendance Office as soon as you arrive at school. The note must contain the student’s name, student’s ID number, reason for leaving, the time the student needs to leave, the parent/guardian signature, and the parent/guardian phone number.
• Students may not leave campus without parent/guardian permission.
• Releases to home or authorization to leave school for appointments or personal business will be counted towards the total allowed absences.
• PLEASE MAKE ALL APPOINTMENTS AFTER SCHOOL.
• Check-Outs: A written request from the parent/guardian is required to check out of Summer School. Students must take the request to the Attendance Office.

• Upon returning from the absence(s), students are required to provide written verification of the absence(s). The absence note must contain the student’s name, student’s ID number, reason for absence, number of days, phone number, and parent/guardian signature.

• Six-Week Classes, including ESY: The first day of Summer School is June 8; the last day is July 17.
• Three-Week Classes: The first day of summer session one is June 8. The first day of summer session two is June 29.
• Note: Students will NOT be excused for extended absences or vacations during Summer School. There are NO exceptions.

• A tardy will be marked as an absence for the first hour of the block, but present for the following hour.
• One tardy is equal to one hour of detention.

• Visitors are not allowed at Summer School. Unauthorized visitors may be arrested for trespassing.
