iGranada Student, Joseph Cordero on Compassion and Leadership in Animal Welfare

Joseph Cordero, a high school senior at Granada Hills Charter, has been making waves in the community with his dedication to animal welfare and leadership. Recently, he was honored with two Los Angeles City Awards of Recognition from Councilmember John Lee, CD12, for his outstanding contributions.

Joseph's journey began in 2022 when he started volunteering at the Chatsworth Animal Shelter. Joseph's flexible schedule as an iGranada student made his academic load and volunteer hours more manageable.

Witnessing the surge in surrendered pets due to post-Covid financial strains, he took it upon himself to address the core issue of pet food insecurity. His Eagle Scout Project, the Expansion & Revitalization of the S.F.V. Animal Shelter Pet Food Pantry, raised over $1100, collected 300 lbs of pet food, and procured five commercial storage racks and supplies.

He also recruited 15 volunteers, both adults and youth, to revitalize and expand the L.A. East Valley Animal Shelter Pet Food Pantry, which services all of SFV residents. His system for organizing, storing, and distributing free pet food has not only helped families in need but also increased the success of adoptions and pet retention.

"Joseph's accomplishments are a testament to his compassion, leadership, and dedication to making a positive impact in his community. His work not only benefits animals but also serves as an inspiration to others to get involved and make a difference. I am so proud of him," said Marisa Cordero, Joseph's mother.

In addition to his work with the animal shelter, Joseph has also been recognized for his leadership skills. He was selected as a delegate representing Granada Hills Charter for the John Lee CD12 Youth in Excellence Leadership program. Through this program, he received training in Los Angeles City civic and government functions, including political processes and public policy.

"As Joseph pursues his dream of becoming a veterinarian for large animals, his achievements will undoubtedly open doors to a bright future," said Nicole Austin, the Administrative Director of iGranada, GHC's online learning and independent study program.

Joseph's dedication to animal welfare extends beyond the shelter. He now volunteers at the Ride-On Therapeutic Horsemanship Center in Chatsworth, where he assists special needs clients with therapeutic horse riding.
