STEM Students Earn National Recognition in New York Times AI Contest

Granada Hills Charter (GHC) is proud to celebrate two outstanding students from our STEM program who have earned national recognition in the prestigious New York Times AI Contest.

Senior student Gianne Cabrera was named a finalist for her original artwork, “Astray Icarus (AI),” while Hayk Mkrtchyan received an honorable mention for his submission.

The New York Times AI Contest invited students across the country to explore a timely and complex question: What is it like to think, create, teach, and learn at a time when artificial intelligence is transforming our world? Students responded through a variety of creative formats, including visual art, writing, audio, and video.

Gianne’s piece draws inspiration from the myth of Icarus to examine the risks of overreliance on artificial intelligence. Reflecting on her personal experience, she explores how increasing dependence on AI can diminish creativity, autonomy, and critical thinking.

Both students were recently recognized during a class celebration honoring their achievements.

This recognition highlights the strength of our STEM program, where students are challenged to think critically, create meaningfully, and engage with real-world issues at the intersection of technology and society.

Congratulations to Gianne and Hayk on this exceptional accomplishment.
