This semester has been a particularly rich and exciting time for our arts programs. Perhaps the biggest highlight was our Honors Choir and Chamber Singers’ performing with the Los Angeles Master Chorale in February. After writing the words and melodies for their own original oratorio last fall, titled (Un)American: An Oratorio, our students performed alongside professionals from the Master Chorale in our own Highlander Hall. Focused on the work of the House Unamerican Activities Committee (Enciclopedia Britanica), this 40-minute piece was moving, inspiring and thought-provoking. I’m sure each student involved will remember the evening’s performance for years to come.
On Monday evening, GHC’s Board of Directors reconsidered its COVID-19 vaccination policies for students, staff, workers, and volunteers, and voted to approve a revised policy under which vaccination against COVID-19 is encouraged, but not required, for access to the school campus and participation in school activities. This change follows in the footsteps of LAUSD’s decision in late September 2023 to rescind its COVID-19 vaccination policy with respect to LAUSD employees, and also employees, workers, and volunteers at independent charter schools authorized by LAUSD, as well as GHC’s experience this fall with respect to COVID-19, and the successful and safe start to the 2023-2024 school year.

So I am writing to you today regarding the recent news of war in the Middle East, following the Hamas terrorist attacks on Israel and the unfolding response.
