February 22, 2023 – Granada Hills, CA – There is such a thing as a free ride, at least for students at Granada Hills Charter (GHC).
Under a partnership between GHC and LA Metro, GHC students will be able to ride Metro and other partnering transit agencies for free with a Metro GoPass TAP card. The GoPass card enables students to take unlimited free rides on Metro bus and rail, City of Commerce, Culver CityBus, Foothill Transit, Glendale Beeline, LADOT Dash, LA County Shuttles, Long Beach Transit, Montebello Bus, Norwalk Transit, Pasadena Transit, Santa Monica Big Blue Bus and Torrance Transit.
GHC is one of 51 school districts and charter schools, five community college districts and 14 colleges working with LA Metro on the GoPass program, with more than 1 million students eligible.
“We know that having trouble getting to school is a significant cause of student absenteeism, which directly impacts their learning and eventual graduation. This program meets that challenge head on,” said Brian Bauer, GHC’s Chief Executive Officer and Superintendent. “Our mission is to provide our students with a challenging, engaging education – but first they have to be at school and in class. GoPass is a simple and smart way to help students get to school easily and on time.”
LA Metro also notes that the American Heart Association has found that people who use public transit are 44% less likely to be overweight due to having a more active lifestyle.
“The fact that having a GoPass also can promote more exercise and help our students be healthier is the icing on this cake,” Bauer said. “We’re thrilled to be a part of this program and hope every student will take advantage of it.”
Upon receiving their GoPass TAP cards, GHC students simply need to go to taptogo.net/gopass OR call 866.TAPTOGO to activate their card. And then, just tap every time they board to ride for free.
And GoPass doesn’t have to be used just to get to and from school. Students can use the card any time, after school and on weekends, through June 30. GoPass works on a wide range of Southern California public transit systems including Metro bus and rail, City of Commerce, Culver CityBus, Foothill Transit, Glendale Beeline, LADOT Dash, LA County Shuttles, Long Beach Transit, Montebello Bus, Norwalk Transit, Pasadena Transit, Santa Monica Big Blue Bus and Torrance Transit.
With GoPass, there are few places GHC students won’t be able to go.
