Competing and Succeeding: Speech Team Steps Up Their Game

Competing and Succeeding: Speech Team Steps Up Their Game
Miranda Cardenas

This competition season has been eventful for GHC’s Speech Team! We will highlight their latest hard work and accomplishments.

The speech team has been competing in tournaments and has had a lot of success. In fact, the team competed at both Harvard and Berkeley this year. Competing against other schools provides opportunities to show off their knowledge and skills.

Earlier this year, the Speech Team participated in the Tri-County Forensics League (TCFL) Spring Open Speech tournament. They won several awards at the tournament held at Taft High School. Congratulations in Extemporaneous Speaking to Nancy Javkhlan (1st) and Aayushi Garg (Superior), in Informative Speaking to Alisha Hannanali (1st) and Seanna Kim (1st) both receiving a picket fence, and in Original Oratory, Ruhi Shah (Superior).

The team is a group of dedicated students who are passionate about public speaking. They have worked hard to earn their awards and trophies, but it's not just their hard work that makes the team successful. The dedication and expertise of their coaches create an environment for constant growth and learning. Their coaches are Mrs. Phipps, and assistant coach, Ms. Muralles, a GHC alum from the class of 2018.

The team also competed at the Harvard National Forensics Tournament. A special congrats to Sophomore Savanna Kimball for placing in the top 12 in Humorous Interpretation. She beat nearly 200 competitors!

In addition to competing against other schools, their primary goal is to improve communication skills by learning how to express themselves through written and spoken words. The team also works on improving confidence levels so they can become better communicators and leaders within the school community.

Stellar communicators in the making!

We're excited to see what the future holds and look forward to seeing them grow as a team. They hope to include new students as they continue competing at challenging levels and participating in tournaments across the country.

We are proud of the Speech Team's accomplishments this year and hope you will join us in recognizing their successes.
