Los Angeles Master Chorale Joins GHC Choral Students To Premiere Original Work
Desiree Balfour

After writing the words and melodies for their own original oratorio last fall, titled (Un)American: An Oratorio, our students performed alongside professionals from the Master Chorale in our own Highlander Hall.

This semester has been a particularly rich and exciting time for our arts programs. Perhaps the biggest highlight was our Honors Choir and Chamber Singers’ performing with the Los Angeles Master Chorale in February.

After writing the words and melodies for their own original oratorio last fall, titled (Un)American: An Oratorio, our students performed alongside professionals from the Master Chorale in our own Highlander Hall.

Focused on the work of the House Unamerican Activities Committee (Enciclopedia Britanica), this 40-minute piece was moving, inspiring and thought-provoking. I’m sure each student involved will remember the evening’s performance for years to come.

The GHC choir department is made up of groups that regularly work with groups such as the Los Angeles Master Chorale and the San Francisco Opera, and earn Superior festival ratings and recognition at various events and competitions throughout the year.

GHC's Choir Program has four curricular choirs as well as four extra-curricular A Cappella ensembles, with over 200 students participating. Performance opportunities abound throughout the year both on campus and off for the following groups:

  • G-Notes Show Choir
  • Advanced Chamber Singers
  • Highlander Honors Choir
  • Concert Choir
  • and extra-curricular A Cappella groups Once Upon a Time & Happily Ever After

GHC's Choir Program is dedicated to providing professional performing arts training for our students. With an emphasis on music literacy, as well as vocal technique and performing skills, our choirs develop even the most novice student into a bona fide musician.

It is our philosophy that by allowing students to express themselves and achieve high levels of excellence in the performing arts, students can and will endeavor to reach greater heights in other subject matters.

All students grades 9-12 are welcome to join the choir family and may audition for Honors, Chamber, and/or G-Notes Show Choir. Auditions formally take place in early May, please contact Dr. Balfour at desireebalfour@ghctk12.com for more information.
